Why I charge what I do

Posted by Webmaster on January 20, 2018 at 9:50 AM Comments comments (0)

I received a call from a refinisher in British Columbia yesterday confirming what I charge to replace pre-woven cane. They were concerned that my price hasn't changed in years. It seemed like the individual was trying to convince me to increase my prices as replacing pre woven cane is a lot of work. It is true it is a lot of work. It is a lot of work to complete any of the weaving styles I offer.

I charge what I believe is a fair price, for quality workmanship, in a timely manner just like my website says. I keep my prices as they are so that repairing woven pieces is attainable for hopefully anyone and I am making a decent wage and paying my bills. Granted for some weaving projects I make less than minimum wage; I choose to do this as I enjoy what I do and I want everyone to be able to have their woven furniture repaired if it is required. Have yourselves a truly awesome day.

Getting Ready to Cane Canada While Living in our RV Full Time

Posted by Webmaster on December 26, 2017 at 10:10 AM Comments comments (1)

David and I are going to follow our dream of living in a RV full time while exploring Canada. Our current plan is to rent our house in Calgary, Alberta and travel to the beautiful area of British Columbia November 2019. We plan to stay in the areas of Vancouver and Victoria for about one and a half years. We plan on weaving chairs local to the areas we are exploring and would love to meet you on our travels.

Caning Calgary will not be accepting any more chairs shipped from outside of Calgary after July 2019 so that they can be completed and returned prior to hitting the road.

We are very excited about this move and once we figure out how to set up a YouTube channel we will be sharing our journey and experencies on our channel as we so enjoy watching other full time RV dwellers on YouTube. Such a wealth on stories and information.

Shipping Alternatives

As there is a potential Canada Post strike courier services offer an alternative way to ship chairs and backs to Caning Calgary.

Hi Laurie:

My wife and I are really impressed, not only at the super caning repair on our antique rocking chair but also in regards to the speed at which you completed everything.

I promise to oil the wicker twice a year and probably at time-change intervals. Only problem is that, under those circumstances, it might outlast us in longevity, meaning less business for you, so will be certain to pass your name to our daughter for future uses thereof.

Once again, many thanx!

Laurie Blake has been a second generation speciality chair weaver since 1986. I love weaving all types of chairs. I mostly see hand caned chairs and fibre rush chairs. For some reason Danish cord chairs seem to come in spurts. Lately I have been doing a lot of teak chairs in the rush pattern using Danish cord material. The Danish cord material seems to bring a totally different look to the rush pattern. I truly enjoy weaving chairs and find it a pleasure to restore your family heirloom or newly discovered treasure. I look forward to providing you quality workmanship. At a fair price. In a timely manner. Because that's what I do. Good old fashioned client service with a skip in my step and a smile on my face.

I received my bulk package of shipping boxes from Staples yesterday; probably a little delayed due to the holiday season. I will package them up for George this weekend and take some photos for the chair shipping page. George was very thankful for the quick turn around time on the chair over the holiday season.

Danish Cord Chair Completed with Rush Pattern

I finished Betty's chairs last week and she was very happy with the results. Betty's husband now has a clean and freshly woven set of chairs for his boy card evening. I posted a photo of her wingback style chairs under both fibre rush and Danish cord pages as they were woven with Danish cord using the standard rush pattern.
